How long do solar panels last in the UAE?
Good-quality solar panels typically last 25 to 30 years or more in the UAE. They do not switch off at the end of that time: their output falls slowly, by a median of about 0.5% a year in an NREL review of nearly 2,000 field measurements, and performance warranties commonly guarantee 80% to 84% of rated power after 25 years. The part most likely to need replacing is the inverter, which for a string inverter typically lasts about 10 to 15 years. Gulf heat, sunlight and dust add stress, so module choice, installation quality and cleaning decide how close a system gets to those figures.
- Typical panel life
- 25 to 30+ years
- Median output loss
- About 0.5% a year (NREL)
- Performance warranty
- Commonly 80–84% after 25 years
- String inverter life
- About 10 to 15 years
What "lifespan" means for a solar panel
A solar panel has no moving parts and rarely fails outright. What changes with age is how much power it delivers: the cells, solder joints, encapsulant and backsheet slowly wear under sunlight, heat cycles and humidity, and output drifts down a little each year. So the useful question is not "when will it stop?" but "how much will it still produce in year 20 or 25?".
That is also why the end of a warranty is not the end of a panel's life. A module that still produces around 85% to 90% of its rating after 25 years keeps saving money on the DEWA bill for as long as it is safe and working. Our solar payback guide shows how many years a villa system takes to pay for itself, after which the savings continue.
How fast output declines
A widely cited benchmark is a National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) review by Jordan and Kurtz, which assembled nearly 2,000 degradation rates measured on modules and systems in the field over about 40 years and found a median of 0.5% per year. Warranty terms follow a similar pattern: many manufacturers allow a larger drop of about 2% to 3% in the first year, then about 0.3% to 0.7% a year after that, with n-type modules generally at the lower end.
The table shows what that means for a 10 kWp villa system that produces about 16,500 kWh in its first year, using our conservative planning yield of 1,650 kWh per kWp. It compares the 0.5% a year median with a faster 0.8% a year.
| Year | At 0.5% a year | At 0.8% a year |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | 100.0% · about 16,500 kWh | 100.0% · about 16,500 kWh |
| Year 10 | 95.5% · about 15,760 kWh | 92.8% · about 15,310 kWh |
| Year 20 | 90.5% · about 14,930 kWh | 84.8% · about 13,990 kWh |
| Year 25 | 88.0% · about 14,520 kWh | 80.8% · about 13,330 kWh |
Over 25 years the system generates about 388,000 kWh at 0.5% a year and about 373,000 kWh at 0.8% a year, a difference of about 14,800 kWh, or roughly one year of generation. This is a simple straight-line illustration for one system size; actual output also depends on orientation, shading, cleaning and the specific modules. See how to size a villa system for where the 1,650 kWh per kWp figure comes from.
What the Gulf climate changes
Deserts are hard on solar modules. A 2024 review by researchers from the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), Fraunhofer CSP, Purdue University and Polymer Competence Center Leoben, reported by PV Tech, found that:
- Deserts receive the highest horizontal irradiance in the world, about 2,100 to 2,700 kWh per m² a year, and fault-free cells can reach 80 °C to more than 100 °C.
- Daily heating and cooling causes thermo-mechanical damage such as finger and interconnect breakage, ribbon cracks, delamination and cell cracks, and existing cracks grow faster in hot deserts.
- Strong ultraviolet light causes discolouration, and abrasive dust can wear the glass surface.
- The standard qualification tests, IEC 61215 and IEC 61730, were designed around moderate climates, so the authors proposed a hot desert test cycle and a front-side UV dose of 60 kWh/m², four times the current 15 kWh/m².
None of this means panels do not last in the UAE; utility plants and villa systems across the region are designed for 25 years and more. It means the choice of module and how it is installed and maintained matter more here than in a mild climate. Heat also lowers output day to day, separately from ageing; our guide to solar panels in Dubai heat and dust explains temperature coefficients and soiling losses.
Inverters, batteries and the rest of the system
- String inverters typically last about 10 to 15 years and usually carry 5 to 10 year warranties, often extendable. Plan for at least one replacement over a 25-year system life, and mount the inverter in a shaded, ventilated place, because heat shortens the life of electronics.
- Microinverters and DC optimisers are designed for about 20 to 25 years and usually carry warranties of similar length.
- Batteries, if fitted, wear with use and heat and are normally warranted separately by cycles or years; see solar battery storage for Dubai villas.
- Mounting, cables and connectors should be specified for UV and heat so that they last as long as the panels; ask what is used and how it is warranted.
Solar warranties explained
| Warranty | Who gives it | Typical term | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product (materials and workmanship) | Panel manufacturer | At least 10 years; 15 to 25 years from premium makers | Manufacturing defects in the panel; remedy is usually repair, replacement or refund |
| Performance (power output) | Panel manufacturer | 25 years, some 30 years | A guaranteed share of rated power, commonly 80% to 84% after 25 years, 88% to 92% on some premium modules |
| Inverter | Inverter manufacturer | 5 to 10 years for string inverters, often extendable; 20 to 25 years for microinverters | Inverter faults; check whether labour and shipping are included |
| Installation (workmanship) | Your installer | Varies by contractor | Mounting, wiring, roof penetrations and the installer's own work |
Manufacturers can reject claims when panels were installed outside their instructions, for example clamped outside the permitted zones, when panels were damaged by people walking on them during installation or cleaning, or when the owner cannot supply installation records and photos. Ask your installer for every warranty in writing, with the manufacturer's name and the exact model numbers, and keep the commissioning documents. For DEWA-connected systems, the panels and inverters must also come from DEWA's approved equipment list; see our Shams Dubai guide.
How to make a UAE system last
- Choose proven, approved equipment. Compare degradation terms in the performance warranty, not just price per watt, within DEWA-approved models.
- Insist on careful installation. Correct clamping, an air gap behind the panels, sealed roof penetrations and cables kept out of direct sun where possible.
- Keep the inverter cool. Shaded, ventilated wall or plant room, never in full sun on the roof.
- Clean without damage. Use soft brushes and low-mineral water, do not walk on panels, and follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions; see solar panel cleaning in Dubai.
- Watch the numbers. Compare monthly generation with the same month last year. A sudden drop usually means soiling, shading, a tripped string or an inverter fault rather than ageing.
- Inspect regularly. A periodic check of connectors, cables, mounting and the inverter catches problems before they cost generation.

Frequently asked questions
How long do solar panels last in the UAE?
Good-quality crystalline silicon panels typically keep working for 25 to 30 years or more in the UAE. They do not stop suddenly at the end of that period; their output declines slowly, so a 25-year-old panel usually still produces most of its original power. The inverter is the part most likely to need replacing during the system's life.
How much do solar panels degrade each year?
An NREL review of nearly 2,000 field measurements found a median degradation rate of about 0.5% per year. Many performance warranties allow about 2% to 3% in the first year and about 0.3% to 0.7% per year after that. Hot desert conditions add stress, so module choice and installation quality matter in the Gulf.
What does a solar panel performance warranty cover?
A performance warranty guarantees that a panel will still produce a stated share of its rated power after a number of years, commonly 80% to 84% after 25 years, and 88% to 92% for some premium modules. Some manufacturers offer 30-year performance warranties. It is separate from the product warranty, which covers manufacturing defects.
How long do solar inverters last?
String inverters typically last about 10 to 15 years and usually carry 5 to 10 year warranties, often extendable. Microinverters and DC optimisers are designed for about 20 to 25 years. Plan for at least one string-inverter replacement over a 25-year system life, and mount inverters in shade to reduce heat stress.
Does the UAE heat shorten solar panel life?
Heat and sunlight stress panels more in deserts than in mild climates. A 2024 review by DEWA, Fraunhofer CSP, Purdue University and Polymer Competence Center Leoben noted cell temperatures of 80 °C to more than 100 °C and failure modes such as cell cracks, delamination and UV discolouration, and proposed tougher desert test standards. Choosing proven modules and installing them well reduces these risks.
What can void a solar panel warranty?
Common reasons include incorrect installation, such as clamping panels outside the manufacturer's permitted zones, physical damage from walking on panels during installation or cleaning, and missing installation records or photos when a claim is made. Keep the installer's documents and follow the cleaning guidance in the warranty.
