How many solar panels does a Dubai villa need?
Most villas in Dubai need a solar system of roughly 7 to 30 kWp, which is about 13 to 55 modern panels. The quick way to size yours: add up the last 12 months of consumption on your DEWA bills, divide by about 1,650 kWh (what each kWp of panels generates in a year in UAE conditions), then check that your roof has about 7 m² of clear space for every kWp. A family villa using 24,000 kWh a year needs around 14.5 kWp: about 26 panels of 550 W on roughly 100 m² of roof.
- Output per kWp
- ~1,650 kWh a year
- Roof space
- ~7 m² per kWp
- Villa guide price
- ~AED 3,300 per kWp
- Install time
- About two weeks
About these numbers. 1,650 kWh per kWp per year and 7 m² per kWp are the conservative planning figures used in our UAE solar calculator, already discounted for dust and heat. They give you the shape of the answer; a roof survey and DEWA-approved design give you the final one.
Step 1: Find your annual consumption
Your DEWA bill (and the DEWA app) shows your electricity use in kWh for each month. Add up the last 12 months. Use a full year, not one bill: a Dubai villa can use two or three times more electricity in August than in January because of air conditioning, and a single summer or winter bill will badly over- or under-size the system.
If you have just moved in, ask the previous occupant or landlord for past consumption, or use a few months of your own bills and allow for the summer peak. If you plan to add an electric car, a pool pump or an extension, add their expected yearly use now: it is cheaper to size for them at the start.
Step 2: Convert kWh into system size (kWp)
Solar systems are sized in kilowatt-peak (kWp), the rated output of the panels. In the UAE, each kWp of well-installed, regularly cleaned panels produces roughly 1,650 kWh a year. So:
System size (kWp) = annual consumption (kWh) ÷ 1,650
A villa using 36,000 kWh a year needs about 36,000 ÷ 1,650 = 21.8 kWp to cover its annual use. The number of panels is simply the system size divided by the panel rating. With 550 W modules (a common size for rooftop systems today), 21.8 kWp is about 40 panels. With smaller or larger modules the count changes, but the kWp, the roof area and the price stay roughly the same.
Step 3: Check your roof can hold it
On a flat concrete villa roof, allow about 7 m² per kWp. That covers the panels themselves plus the walkways and row spacing needed for cleaning, maintenance and to stop rows shading each other. Then subtract what is already up there: water tanks, AC condensers, satellite dishes, stair housings and the strip next to tall parapets that falls in shadow.
If the roof is smaller than the consumption-based size, the roof wins: install the largest system that fits well. Many villas end up roof-limited, and that is fine. Every kWh the system produces still comes off the most expensive part of your bill first, as explained below.
Villa solar sizing table
Use the row closest to your average monthly consumption (annual total divided by 12).
| Average monthly use | Annual use | System size | Roof space | Panels (550 W) | Guide price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 kWh | 12,000 kWh | ~7.3 kWp | ~51 m² | ~13 | ~AED 24,000 |
| 1,500 kWh | 18,000 kWh | ~10.9 kWp | ~76 m² | ~20 | ~AED 36,000 |
| 2,000 kWh | 24,000 kWh | ~14.5 kWp | ~102 m² | ~26 | ~AED 48,000 |
| 3,000 kWh | 36,000 kWh | ~21.8 kWp | ~153 m² | ~40 | ~AED 72,000 |
| 4,000 kWh | 48,000 kWh | ~29.1 kWp | ~204 m² | ~53 | ~AED 96,000 |
Guide prices use our villa guide figure of about AED 3,300 per kWp, which includes design, DEWA approvals, equipment from DEWA's approved list, installation and connection. See what solar costs in Dubai for what moves that figure up or down.
Why you should not oversize
Under Shams Dubai net metering, electricity your panels export to the grid during the day is credited against what you import later, and DEWA credits roll over from one billing period to the next. That means a villa that is empty at noon still benefits from its daytime generation, so you do not need to match the system to your daytime use.
The limit is the other way round. Credits offset your consumption but are not paid out in cash, so a system that produces more than you use in a year adds cost without adding savings. Size to annual consumption (or to your roof, if smaller). DEWA also checks the proposed system against the building's connected load during design approval, which your contractor handles as part of the application.
What each kWh saves you
DEWA's residential electricity tariff is charged in slabs per month: 23 fils per kWh for the first 2,000 kWh, 28 fils from 2,001 to 4,000 kWh, 32 fils from 4,001 to 6,000 kWh and 38 fils above 6,000 kWh, plus a fuel surcharge (6 fils per kWh in October 2026) and 5% VAT, according to DEWA's published slab tariff. Solar reduces your units from the top slab down, so each kWh it covers is worth between about 29 and 44 fils before VAT, depending on how much you use.
As an illustration, a 10 kWp system producing about 16,500 kWh a year would offset roughly AED 4,800 to AED 7,300 of electricity charges a year before VAT, depending on your slab. Heavy summer users save towards the top of that range. Your actual saving depends on your monthly profile, which is why our instant quotation works from your real consumption rather than an average.
Common sizing mistakes
- Sizing from one bill. A July bill can suggest a system twice as large as you need; a January bill half as large.
- Counting the whole roof. Tanks, condensers, access paths and parapet shading typically take a meaningful share of a villa roof.
- Ignoring dust. Output figures assume regular cleaning. Without it, generation falls; see our cleaning and maintenance guide.
- Choosing by panel count. Compare quotes by kWp, equipment on DEWA's approved list, and what is included, not by how many panels are on the roof.
- Using an unenrolled installer. In Dubai only DEWA-enrolled contractors can submit Shams Dubai applications. Read how to choose a solar company before signing.
Frequently asked questions
How many solar panels does a villa in Dubai need?
Most Dubai villas need between about 13 and 55 panels, which is roughly 7 to 30 kWp. To size it, add up 12 months of DEWA consumption in kWh and divide by about 1,650 kWh per kWp per year. A villa using 24,000 kWh a year needs about 14.5 kWp, or around 26 panels of 550 W.
How much roof space does a 10 kWp solar system need in Dubai?
Allow roughly 7 square metres of flat roof per kWp, including access paths and row spacing, so a 10 kWp system needs about 70 square metres. Water tanks, AC condensers, parapets and shading from neighbouring walls reduce the usable area, which is why a site survey confirms the final layout.
Should I size solar to cover 100% of my DEWA bill?
Size to your annual electricity consumption, not more. Under Shams Dubai net metering, DEWA credits exported units against later consumption and the credits roll over, but surplus credits are not paid out in cash, so oversizing beyond your annual use adds cost without adding savings. Solar offsets the electricity consumption and fuel surcharge on the bill, not water charges or other fixed items.
How much does a villa solar system cost in Dubai?
As a guide, a complete villa system from Smart Gulf Energy costs about AED 3,300 per kWp, including design, DEWA approvals, approved equipment, installation and connection. That is about AED 33,000 for 10 kWp and AED 66,000 for 20 kWp. The quotation confirms the exact figure after a survey.
Do I need batteries with villa solar in Dubai?
Not for savings. Because Shams Dubai credits roll over, daytime surplus still offsets evening and later consumption without a battery. A battery is worth considering for backup power during outages or for specific self-consumption goals, and it adds cost and its own approval requirements.
How long does villa solar installation take in Dubai?
A villa installation typically takes about two weeks from contract to generation with Smart Gulf Energy, covering DEWA design approval, installation, inspection and meter connection. Only DEWA-enrolled contractors can submit Shams Dubai applications.
