On-grid, off-grid or hybrid solar: which suits a UAE property?

For almost every villa or building connected to the DEWA grid, an on-grid (grid-tied) system is the right choice: it is the simplest and lowest-cost option, and under Shams Dubai net metering the electricity you export is credited against what you import, with unused credits rolling over. A hybrid system adds a battery and a backup-capable inverter, which buys you power during outages rather than bigger savings. A fully off-grid system only makes sense where there is no reliable grid connection, such as a farm, a remote site or a temporary project, because it must store or generate every kilowatt-hour you need at night.

The three system types in plain terms

On-grid (grid-tied). Panels feed an inverter that synchronises with the DEWA network. During the day your villa uses solar power first; any surplus flows to the grid and is credited on your bill. At night you draw from the grid as normal. There is no battery. For safety, a grid-tied inverter switches off automatically when the grid fails (anti-islanding protection), so a standard on-grid system produces nothing during a power cut, even in full sun.

Hybrid. Still connected to the grid and still net-metered, but with a battery and a hybrid inverter that can isolate a backup circuit when the grid drops. Selected loads such as the fridge, router, lighting and security keep running, and the panels can recharge the battery during the day while the grid is down.

Off-grid (stand-alone). No connection to the utility at all. The solar array, battery bank and inverter are the only power supply, so they must cover the whole load, including every night and every dusty or cloudy spell. Off-grid sites usually keep a generator as a fallback for long periods of low sun or unusually high demand.

Why on-grid is the default in Dubai

The case for batteries in many countries rests on a poor export rate: if exported solar earns far less than imported electricity costs, it pays to store midday generation and use it in the evening. Shams Dubai works differently. DEWA credits each exported kilowatt-hour against the kilowatt-hours you import, and credits not used in one billing period carry forward to the next. In effect the grid already acts as your store, at no extra equipment cost, so a battery does not increase the value of your solar energy; it only moves it in time, with some losses along the way. Our battery storage guide works through this in detail.

That is also why an on-grid system is sized to your annual consumption rather than to your night-time load. Our villa system size guide shows how to work out the kWp from your DEWA bills, and our payback guide explains how the savings add up.

Rules differ by emirate. Dubai and Sharjah use net metering with credits that carry forward. In the Northern Emirates, EtihadWE credits expire within the calendar year, and Abu Dhabi uses a self-supply framework rather than net metering. A hybrid or tightly sized system can make more sense where surplus is worth less. See UAE solar rules compared.

When a hybrid system is worth it

Choose hybrid when you are paying for resilience, not savings. Dubai's grid is very reliable: DEWA reported customer minutes lost of 0.82 minutes in 2025, so for most households backup is a nice-to-have. It becomes worth paying for when even a short interruption is costly:

Size the battery to the circuits you want to keep and for how long, not to the whole villa. Running central air conditioning through an outage needs a very large and expensive battery. In Dubai the battery and hybrid inverter must be part of the design that a DEWA-enrolled contractor submits, or confirmed with DEWA before being added to an existing system; our Shams Dubai guide explains the approval stages.

When off-grid makes sense

Off-grid is a solution for sites where a grid connection does not exist, is not yet available or would cost more than generating on site: desert farms, remote facilities, construction compounds and other temporary sites. In those cases solar with storage often replaces or reduces diesel generation, and the battery, not the roof, usually sets the size of the system.

Designing off-grid is a different exercise from on-grid:

For a property that already has a DEWA connection, disconnecting to go off-grid rarely makes financial sense: you would give up net metering credits and pay for a far larger battery to achieve what the grid already provides.

Cost: how the three compare

Our villa guide price of about AED 3,300 per kWp covers an on-grid PV system, including design, DEWA approvals, equipment from DEWA's approved list, installation and connection, and a typical villa moves from signed contract to generation in about two weeks. A hybrid system adds the cost of the battery and backup-capable inverter on top; off-grid adds a much larger battery bank and usually a generator. Because net metering already gives daytime surplus its full value, the extra spend on storage is repaid in resilience rather than in bill savings. Our villa solar cost guide explains what drives the price.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between on-grid, off-grid and hybrid solar?

An on-grid solar system is connected to the utility grid and has no battery; surplus power is exported for credits. A hybrid system is grid-connected but adds a battery and backup-capable inverter so selected circuits keep running in a power cut. An off-grid system has no grid connection and relies entirely on panels, batteries and usually a generator.

Which solar system is best for a villa in Dubai?

For most Dubai villas connected to DEWA, an on-grid system is best. Shams Dubai net metering credits exported electricity against imports and carries unused credits forward, so the grid acts as free storage. Choose a hybrid system only if you need backup power for critical loads.

Does on-grid solar work during a power cut in the UAE?

No. A grid-tied inverter is designed to shut down when the grid fails, to protect utility workers, so a standard on-grid system stops producing during an outage even in full sun. Backup during outages requires a hybrid inverter, a battery and a dedicated backup circuit.

Is a hybrid solar system worth it in Dubai?

A hybrid solar system in Dubai is worth it when you are paying for backup, not savings. Under net metering a battery does not increase the value of your solar energy, and DEWA's grid is highly reliable, so hybrid suits villas with critical loads such as home offices, medical equipment or cold storage.

Can I go completely off-grid with solar in the UAE?

Technically yes, and off-grid solar with batteries is used on farms, remote facilities and temporary sites without a grid connection. For a property already connected to DEWA it rarely makes financial sense, because you lose net metering credits and need a much larger battery bank and usually a backup generator.

Do I need DEWA approval for a hybrid solar system?

Yes. Any grid-connected system in Dubai, including one with a battery, must be designed and submitted by a DEWA-enrolled contractor using equipment on DEWA's eligible list. The battery and hybrid inverter should be included in the Shams Dubai design or confirmed with DEWA before they are added.
