A market that changed in 2026
Abu Dhabi's power sector has long been structured around utility-scale procurement. EWEC procures generation at scale, and projects such as Noor Abu Dhabi and Al Dhafra made the emirate home to some of the lowest-cost solar tariffs recorded anywhere.
Distributed solar was the missing piece. On 5 February 2026 the Department of Energy's self-supply policy took effect, allowing businesses across the emirate to install solar with battery storage behind the meter for the first time. Metering and settlement guidelines were still being finalised at the time of writing, which makes early design decisions consequential — systems specified now should be built to accommodate the settlement rules when they land.
Where this matters commercially. Abu Dhabi's industrial and logistics estates carry large, flat, unshaded roofs above operations that consume power in daylight hours. That is close to the ideal self-consumption profile, and it is the segment the new framework opens up.

The distinction matters. An Al Ain project follows AADC's process, not ADDC's, and treating them as interchangeable is a common source of delay for contractors new to the emirate.

Who connects a solar system in Al Ain?

What is EWEC's role?
EWEC is the single buyer for utility-scale generation in Abu Dhabi, procuring large solar and other capacity through competitive tenders. It is not involved in behind-the-meter self-supply systems, which are handled through the distribution company.
Do you deliver utility-scale projects in Abu Dhabi?

How long does a commercial solar project take in Abu Dhabi?
Commercial and industrial systems of 100 kWp to 5 MWp typically take two to four months from contract to commissioning. Utility-scale solar of 20 to 200 MWp takes 10 to 18 months, and utility battery storage 8 to 14 months.
