Solar & Storage EPC in South Africa
REIPPPP is one of the world's most successful competitive renewable procurement programmes. Alongside it, load shedding has made commercial storage a resilience purchase rather than an optimisation one.

The market
South Africa's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme has run regular competitive rounds for wind, solar PV and battery storage, and is widely regarded as one of the most successful frameworks of its kind anywhere. The Just Energy Transition provides the policy frame as the country moves away from coal.
The commercial market has been shaped by something else: load shedding. Scheduled outages turned battery storage from a financial optimisation into an operational necessity for manufacturers, cold chain operators and retailers. That is a different sale, and it closes faster.
Storage leads here, not solar. In most markets we size storage after sizing PV. In South Africa the resilience requirement often sets the battery, and the array is sized to serve it. Getting that order right is the difference between a proposal that lands and one that reads as generic.

Frequently asked questions
What is REIPPPP?
The Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, South Africa's competitive bidding framework for wind, solar PV and battery storage. It is regarded as one of the most successful renewable procurement programmes globally.
Why is battery storage so important in South Africa?
Load shedding has made storage an operational necessity rather than a financial optimisation for manufacturers, cold chain operators and retailers. The resilience requirement frequently determines the battery size, with the solar array sized to serve it.
Who regulates electricity in South Africa?
NERSA regulates the sector and Eskom operates the national grid, with REIPPPP handling competitive procurement of independent renewable generation.
