Solar carports in the UAE: shade and power from one structure
A solar carport is a steel parking shade whose roof is made of solar panels, so the same structure keeps cars out of the sun and generates electricity. In Dubai a carport on your own plot can be connected behind your DEWA meter under Shams Dubai, with the same NOC, design approval and inspection steps as a rooftop system. Carports cost more per kWp than a villa roof because of the structure and foundations, but they suit homes with crowded or shaded roofs and businesses with large car parks, and they pair naturally with EV charging and bifacial panels.
- Best for
- Full roofs, big car parks
- Dubai connection
- Shams Dubai net metering
- Extra cost driver
- Steel structure & foundations
- Natural add-on
- EV charger, bifacial panels
What a solar carport is
A solar carport replaces the fabric or metal sheet of a normal parking shade with a frame of solar panels. Columns and beams carry the panels high enough for cars to park underneath, and the cables run down a column to an inverter and on to the building's electrical board. Electrically it is the same as any other grid-connected system; structurally it is a small building in its own right.
DEWA itself uses the format at scale: in 2018 it commissioned 2 MWp of solar carports at its headquarters and at the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment building, using 6,700 modules to shade 885 parking spaces.
Villa carports vs commercial car park canopies
| Aspect | Villa carport | Commercial car park canopy |
|---|---|---|
| Typical reason | Roof full of tanks, chillers or shading; wish to shade the driveway | Limited roof space, large open car park, staff or customer parking |
| Size | One to four bays | Rows of bays; our commercial systems start from about 100 kWp |
| Grid connection | Behind the villa's DEWA meter | Behind the building's meter; sized against its connected load |
| Common add-ons | Wall-box EV charger, battery | EV charging hub, battery buffer, EPC plus finance |
For businesses, see our commercial solar in Dubai page, which covers rooftop, car park and storage systems delivered as EPC or EPC plus finance.
Structure: wind, heat and foundations
The structure is what makes a carport different from a rooftop system. It has to carry the panels and resist wind uplift, because a raised canopy catches wind from below as well as above. That means:
- Structural design by an engineer to the wind and load requirements that apply in the emirate, not an off-the-shelf shade frame with panels bolted on.
- Foundations sized for the columns: pad footings or piles, set out around driveways, kerbs and buried services.
- Corrosion protection, normally hot-dip galvanised steel, which matters near the coast.
- Clearance and layout that let cars and doors open freely, keep columns away from turning paths, and allow safe access for panel cleaning.
Heat works in a carport's favour. Panels lose output as they get hotter, and air flowing freely under a raised canopy keeps them cooler than panels mounted close to a roof; standard module temperature models use separate, cooler parameters for open-rack mounting for this reason. Our heat and dust guide explains how much output UAE heat costs and how cleaning schedules recover dust losses.
Bifacial panels under a carport
Bifacial panels collect light on both faces. On a flush villa roof the back of the panel sees little light, so the extra yield is small. A carport lifts the panels well above the ground, so light reflected from the paving reaches the rear side. In desert tests QEERI measured about 10% more energy from bifacial panels, and the gain depends on mounting height and how reflective the ground is: pale paving or concrete helps, dark asphalt much less. Our solar panel types guide compares bifacial, TOPCon, PERC and HJT panels for UAE conditions. Bifacial glass-glass panels also let some daylight through between cells, which some owners prefer for a shade.
Pairing a carport with EV charging
A carport puts the panels directly above the car, so it is the obvious place for a charger. Dubai's public network had grown to more than 1,270 charging points and over 40,600 electric vehicles by mid-2025, according to DEWA figures, and many owners now want to charge at home too.
- Villas: a wall-box charger is another load on the home's supply. Midday solar generation offsets daytime charging; overnight charging still uses grid power unless a battery is added.
- Commercial sites: several fast chargers can demand more power than the site connection allows. A buffer battery charges slowly and discharges quickly when vehicles arrive. Our EV charging infrastructure page covers 150 to 350 kW DC hubs with a PV canopy.
Shams Dubai eligibility and approvals
A carport on your plot connected behind your DEWA meter follows the normal Shams Dubai path:
- A DEWA-enrolled contractor applies for the NOC and submits the system design for approval.
- Panels and inverters must be on DEWA's eligible equipment list.
- Installation is carried out to DEWA's guidelines, followed by DEWA's inspection.
- DEWA fits the bidirectional meter and net metering starts.
The structure is a separate question from the electrical approval. Depending on the plot and community, a carport may need a building permit or master-developer approval, and the structural drawings should be ready before the DEWA design submission. Outside Dubai, the rules of ADDC/AADC, SEWA and EtihadWE apply instead; see UAE solar rules compared.
What drives the cost of a solar carport
Our villa guide price of about AED 3,300 per kWp covers a complete on-grid rooftop system with approved equipment, design, approvals, installation and connection. A carport adds costs a roof does not have, so expect a higher figure per kWp. The main drivers are:
- Steel structure: span, height, number of bays and wind design.
- Foundations and civil works: excavation, concrete, and working around existing paving and services.
- Cable runs and trenching back to the main board, which are longer than on a roof.
- Panel choice: bifacial glass-glass modules can add a small premium.
- Extras: EV chargers, lighting, drainage, a battery.
The panels and inverter are priced as in our solar panel cost guide; system size is set by your consumption, as explained in the villa system size guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can I install a solar carport on my villa in Dubai?
Yes, in most cases. A solar carport on your own plot can be connected behind your DEWA meter under Shams Dubai in the same way as a rooftop system: a DEWA-enrolled contractor applies for the NOC, submits the design, installs eligible equipment and arranges DEWA's inspection before the meter is changed. The steel structure also needs a proper structural design, and any building permit or community approval your plot requires.
Are solar carports more expensive than rooftop solar?
Yes. A carport adds a purpose-built steel structure, foundations and longer cable runs that a rooftop system does not need, so the cost per kWp is higher than a standard villa roof system. The panels, inverter and DEWA approval steps are the same; the structure is the main difference.
Do solar carports produce as much power as rooftop panels?
A well-oriented carport usually produces at least as much per panel as a rooftop system because the panels are raised and air flows freely underneath, which keeps them cooler in UAE heat. The tilt is often shallower than an ideal rooftop frame, so orientation and tilt are agreed at design stage.
Are bifacial panels a good choice for a carport?
Often, yes. Bifacial panels collect reflected light on their rear side, and a raised carport over a light-coloured surface gives them far more rear light than a flush roof. In desert tests QEERI measured about 10% more energy from bifacial panels; the gain on a carport depends on height and on how reflective the ground is.
Can a solar carport power an EV charger?
Yes. A carport is a natural place for an EV charger because the car is already parked under the panels. At villa scale a wall-box charger is simply another load on the home's supply; on commercial sites a battery buffer can let several fast chargers run on a smaller grid connection.
How long does it take to build a solar carport?
A villa carport takes longer than a typical villa rooftop system, which our team can move from signed contract to generation in about two weeks, because the structure has to be designed, fabricated and founded first. Commercial car park canopies are scheduled after the site survey and DEWA design approval.
