The mechanism
SEWA operates net metering. Electricity your system exports is credited against what you import, and unused credit carries forward to following billing periods rather than expiring at year end.
That carry-forward is the whole story for system sizing. Because surplus generated in June still offsets consumption in November, a larger array stays economic. You size to annual consumption, not to daytime load.
Why this differs from the Northern Emirates
EtihadWE, which covers the emirates immediately north of Sharjah, runs its Distributed Solar System programme on the opposite principle: credits expire within the same calendar year. An identical building under EtihadWE should be sized tighter, closer to its daytime load, because anything not consumed before year end is lost.

The boundary trap
Sharjah is the one emirate where jurisdiction is genuinely ambiguous. Sharjah city and the main urban areas are SEWA territory, but some northern and eastern enclaves fall under EtihadWE instead. The process, the metering arrangement and the credit rules all change across that line.
If a site sits anywhere near a boundary, confirm with both utilities before beginning an application. Starting with the wrong utility means starting again.
Contractor enrolment
Each UAE utility maintains its own enrolled contractor list, and enrolment is not transferable between them. A DEWA-enrolled contractor is not automatically permitted to submit to SEWA. For portfolios spanning several emirates, verify enrolment utility by utility rather than assuming one approval covers the country.
Equipment
Equipment must appear on the relevant utility's approved list. A quotation built on unlisted equipment describes a system that cannot legally be connected, whatever the price looks like.
